“Kidd!”

The voice behind him was unmistakably DCI Weaver. Kidd had made his way out of the back exit of the station, avoiding the crowds of reporters out the front, trying to slip out before anyone noticed he was gone. Weaver would tell the rest of the team. He’d drop Sanchez a message later on.

“You didn’t have to do that,” he said, keeping his voice low, like Superintendent Charles had ears everywhere. The likelihood was, of course, that he did but Kidd didn’t like to think about that.

“No use both of us getting suspended,” Kidd replied. “I shouldn’t have put you in that position in the first place.”

“I kept you on the case, Kidd,” Weaver said. “I should have taken you off it the second we knew John was involved; I wasn’t thinking straight. You really saved my ass back there.”

“I know. You’re welcome.”

Weaver laughed. “Oh yes, thank you—that would probably be a good start.” He looked Kidd up and down, examining him, like he was trying to figure him out.

“What?” Kidd asked.

“You’re going to be alright, aren’t you?”

“A few days off?” Kidd said with a shrug. “It’s exactly what I need.”

Weaver raised an eyebrow. “You know I don’t believe you.”

“You don’t have to,” Kidd replied. “You’re not going to see me.”

“And my life will be all the more peaceful for it,” Weaver replied. “Be careful out there, okay?”

“How do you mean?”

“With John,” Weaver said. “I know you don’t want to believe he could have done it, but you know better than anyone what people are capable of.”

Kidd did know that, of course he did. There was just a part of him, however small, that was glad that he was no longer on the case.
